    CORONAVIRUS: Appointments Update

    In order to best protect patients and staff and reduce risk of transmission we have moved to a telephone first appointments system at Shirland Road Medical Centre. This is to try reduce risks to our patients and staff from the Coronavirus COVID19 and is mandated by NHS England.

    Please do not attend the medical centre until you have spoken to a doctor or nurse on the telephone first.

    Telephone Appointments

    Appointments with the doctor are telephone first. These can be pre-booked up to 4 weeks in advance. A limited number of same day telephone appointments are also available each day. If needed the doctor will advise you to attend the surgery following a telephone appointment.

    We will always endeavour to let you book an appointment with the doctor of your choice at a time that suits you best. This is obviously not always possible especially at times of high demand (usually around the holiday periods) and when doctors are on holiday.

    You will be booked into a telephone for the morning or afternoon, the time of the appointment is approximate as emergencies can affect exact timings. The doctors may be using a withheld number to call so please ensure that you can receive these.

    Video Consultations

    Please book a telephone appointment (see above). During the consultation the doctor can convert this to a video consultation.

    A link is sent via text message to your smart phone

    This link opens the web browser on your phone, you will need to type in your date of birth to confirm your indentification.

    Please ensure that you have: 

    • Good WiFi or Mobile Data Coverage.
    • An Android or Apple smart phone.
    • The latest version of your web browser app (Google Chrome for Android Phones,  Safari for iPhones)  
    • iPhones running any version of iOS older than version 13 will have to download the Whereby App

    Appointments with the Practice Nurses

    Our Practice Nurses can be booked up to 4 weeks in advance for injections, diagnostic tests, smears, routine blood tests and blood pressure checks. We also run clinics specifically for diabetes, asthma, coronary heart disease, hypertension and advice on stopping smoking. On the morning or afternoon of your appointment the nurse will call you first to ensure you are unaffected by symptoms of Coronavirus COVID19. Following this they will inform you whether to attend the medical centre.

    Also available are bookable telephone appointments to discuss results as well as a limited number of same day telephone appointment. Following this the nurse may advise you to attend the medical centre.

    Free Text Reminders

    This service reminds you of an appointment via a text message. All registered patients are automatically opted into the service.

    Please ensure if you wish to use this service we have your correct mobile telephone number and inform us as soon as possible if your number changes.

    If you do not wish to subscribe please contact the surgery and inform reception that you wish to opt out.

    Chaperones

    If you anticipate that you may require an examination by the Doctor and feel that you would like a chaperone to be present, please make reception aware at the time of booking your appointment so that this can be arranged. Alternatively bring along a member of your family or friend to your appointment.

    Cancelling an Appointment

    If you are unable to attend for your appointment please tell us in good time so that we are able to offer another patient the use of that appointment.

    You can use one of the following methods:

    3. By Telephone:

    4. In Person: Call into your surgery and let the receptionist know in person.

    We can offer your appointment to someone else and therefore help to reduce waiting times.

    As part of our commitment to all our patients we monitor the efficient use of appointments. If a patient regularly fails to attend a booked appointment, the practice reserves the right to remove them and their family from the practice list.
